🐾Adoptable dog update alert🐾
Before we tell you about our amazing adoptable dogs, we wanted to talk about a decision made by the
Alberta Homeward Hound Rescue Bureau team.
We've decided to no longer post the “best guess” for breeds of our lovable rescue dogs.
Our rescue takes in a lot of dogs from northern communities that have been born and living on the land that has no discernible breed. What we DO know about every dog that comes into our care is that they all deserve a warm, cozy pad, a full belly, and
are ALWAYS 100% adorable.
We always appreciate every single human for adopting rescue and not shopping and at the end of the day this much is true:
🐾🐾🐾Rescue is the best breed of them all.🐾🐾🐾
Thank you for understanding,
💛 the AHHRB team 💛

Steps to adoption
- Sit down with your family and decide what kind of dog would be the best fit.Things to consider are personality traits, energy levels, and grooming requirements. Are you wanting a dog that is able to travel with you and explore the world? Or a couch potato that loves a good movie snuggle night?
- Have a look at your budget. Do you have the ability to support another animal and the potential of extra needs that could come up?
- Keeping an eye on the website, start reading our adoptable dog's profiles.
Take a look at your key list of requirements. We know they are all cute - but we want to make sure they are the right fit for you! We have dogs coming in all the time, so if you don't see your match yet, they might be here next week! Rescue can move quick. - When you have a potential dream dog in mind, fill out the application form below!
- Your application will be reviewed within 3 days with an approval for the next step, or declined if we feel it isn't a match
- If approved, we will arrange for a phone call to go over your application and to coordinate a meet & greet with your chosen dog
- You'll head out to your meet & greet to see how you and your family get along with the dog. The foster family can answer questions about the process, the dogs' personality and will also watch to see if the dog responds well to you.
- Are they the one? Take 24 hours to go home, sleep on it and chat with your family to see if this is the right dog to adopt. Let the foster family know and they can help you complete the adoption if they also felt it was a fantastic match! You'll complete the paperwork and submit the adoption fee. Then you get to take your new family member home!
- Not the right dog, that's okay, let us know that, too! We may have another suggestion for you, or you can wait until another dog comes through our doors that captures your heart!

Oscar and Franny
Sex: Oscar - Male, Franny - Female Born: Around November 2018 (O) and November 2020 (F) Breed: Dynamic Duo Weight: Medium-Large OUR STORY 🐾 In November 2023, Oscar and Franny lost their beloved owner and the only life they had ever known. In an instant, everything changed. Since then, they’ve been moved between a few foster homes, never quite able to settle, still searching for a place to truly belong. |
Now, almost three years later, they are still waiting. Through it all, they’ve held onto one constant—each other. Oscar and Franny are deeply bonded and must be adopted together. They walk side by side, sleep curled up together, and find comfort in one another in a way that only they understand. After everything they’ve been through, we can’t ask them to lose that too.
Oscar is a goofy, big-hearted boy who loves snacks, long sniffy walks, and being close to his people. He’s expressive and will happily “chat” when he wants outside or a cuddle. Franny is a gentle, affectionate cuddle bug who loves to snuggle, spend time outside, and stay close to Oscar—he is her comfort and her safe place.
After nearly 3 years of waiting, they’re not asking for much… Just a couch to share, a yard to explore, and a family to love them for the rest of their lives.
If you’ve ever thought about adopting… please consider making it these two. Because somewhere out there is a home that’s missing exactly what Oscar and Franny have to give. And they’ve been waiting long enough.
Dogs? Yesssss! We love to play with all doggy friends.
Cats? No thank you!
Kids? Yes

Barkley
Birthday: October 2021 Sex: Female Breed: Professional Blanket-Toting Snuggler Weight: 70 lbs Once upon a time, there was a sweet girl named Barkley, whose heart is as big as her love for the people she trusts. While she may be a little shy when meeting someone new, she's simply waiting for that special person who will give her the patience and kindness she needs to let her true personality shine. |
Once you've earned Barkley's trust, you'll discover the biggest cuddle bug around. She absolutely melts for belly rubs, loves curling up for snuggles, and wants nothing more than to be close to her favorite people. If you ever wonder where she is, just look for the adorable pup proudly carrying her beloved blanket from room to room—it's her favorite comfort item and one of her cutest little quirks!
Barkley has a playful side too! She loves wrestling with her foster dog brother, playing an enthusiastic game of tug-of-war, going for walks, and happily chewing away on her favorite hard toys. She also has a hilarious habit of "borrowing" shoes whenever she gets the chance. Don't worry... she just likes to keep them safe for you.
This sweet girl is looking for a family that understands that building trust takes time, but the reward is a loyal, affectionate best friend who will love you with her whole heart. She already knows sit and lay down, and she's working hard on focus, wait, touch, and leave it. Barkley is eager to learn—especially when you make it fun!
If you're looking for a gentle soul who will reward your patience with endless love, goofy moments, blanket parades, and unconditional loyalty, Barkley might just be the missing piece your family has been waiting for. ❤️
Likes: Belly rubs, snuggles, walks, wrestling with dog friends, tug-of-war, hard chew toys, carrying her blanket everywhere
Dislikes: Baths, chicken (allergy), not being the center of attention, and being rushed when meeting new people.
Good with Dogs? Yes, with proper introductions.
Good with Cats? Unknown.
Good with Kids? Yes! A home with children 10 years and older would be the best fit.

Abbey
Name: Abbey Birthday: September 2023 Sex: Female Breed: Velcro Lovebug Weight: 52 lbs Introducing Your New Shadow Snuggle Buddy! Once upon a time… there was a sweet, sensitive girl named Abbey who was just waiting for her person to love forever. |
Abbey is the definition of a Velcro dog—once she bonds with you, she’ll be your loyal little shadow, following you from room to room like your very own fluffy assistant (don’t worry… she supervises everything very seriously). Whether you’re cooking, cleaning, or just relaxing, Abbey will be right there, gently reminding you that she deserves pets… and maybe a few more pets… okay, definitely more pets. If you stop, expect a soft little whine asking, “excuse me, I wasn’t done yet.”
She’s a sensitive soul with a heart of gold. Abbey can be a bit timid at first, but once she settles in, she blossoms into the most loving, affectionate companion you could ever ask for. She learns quickly and thrives with positive reinforcement, picking up routines and patterns like a pro.
Abbey loves staying active—whether it’s a game of fetch, a nice walk, or an adventurous hike, she’s always ready to go! She’s still working on her leash manners and can be reactive if another dog rushes her, she’ll need a patient home committed to continuing her training. But don’t worry—she’s incredibly eager to learn and wants nothing more than to make you proud.
Abbey would thrive in a calm, understanding home with older, respectful kids who can match her gentle nature. Small animals aren’t her thing, and fast movements can make her nervous, so a slower-paced environment will help her shine brightest.
If you’re looking for a loyal, affectionate, slightly clingy (in the best way) best friend… Abbey is your girl.
Likes: Fetch, walks, hikes, being your shadow, endless pets
Dislikes: Fast movements, small animals, being ignored during cuddle time
Good with dogs? Yes—big dogs only
Good with cats? No thank you
Good with kids? Best with older, respectful kids

Chanel
Birthday: April 16, 2024 Sex: Female Breed: Designer Cuddle Couture Mix™ Weight: 54 lbs 👜 Meet Chanel: The Luxury Edition Companion Chanel is the perfect blend of sweetness, sass, and snuggles. Since coming into foster care, she has proven herself to be an affectionate girl who simply wants to be wherever her people are. Whether you're moving from room to room or getting ready for work, Chanel will be right there, often laying across your feet for a few extra kisses before you leave. |
A true lady, Chanel loves cozy spots on the couch and would happily sleep at the foot of your bed. She's playful, loves her toys, and enjoys zooming around the house when the mood strikes. She also has a habit of "borrowing" socks and shoes and relocating them to her bed—but don't worry, she doesn't chew them, she simply likes collecting them.
Chanel has a wonderfully expressive personality. From her dramatic side-eye when there's not enough room on the couch to letting you know when she's overdue for attention, she's guaranteed to keep you smiling. She's also known to serenade passing fire trucks with her own enthusiastic howls.
She enjoys walks, loves meeting new people, and is highly treat-motivated, making her eager to continue learning. While she may occasionally get excited by bunnies, magpies, or other dogs on walks, she redirects well and continues to make great progress.
Chanel is looking for a family that appreciates a dog with a big heart, a playful spirit, and just the right amount of drama. If you're searching for a best friend who will make you laugh, keep your feet warm, and love you endlessly, Chanel is ready to make her grand entrance into your life.
Likes: Walks, cuddles, couch time, sleeping near her people, belly rubs, treats, meeting new people, zoomies, toys, carrying socks and shoes, singing along with fire trucks
Dislikes: Getting into the car, not getting enough attention, sharing high-value food items with other dogs
Good with Dogs? Yes

Jazz
Name: Jazz Birthday: June 2024 Sex: Female Breed: Brindle Blanket Baby Weight: 76 lbs If comfort had a mascot, it would absolutely be Jazz. This brindle beauty is basically a weighted blanket with legs, a built-in cuddle setting, and a permanent “must be touching my humans” policy. Personal space? Never heard of her. If you sit down, Jazz assumes you are inviting her directly into your lap — all 76 pounds of her. |
Jazz is the queen of cozy and curiosity. Every grocery bag? Needs inspection. Every new item in the house? Must be sniffed immediately. Every person or squirrel spotted on a walk? She will lovingly stare at it until it disappears into the horizon like she’s in a dramatic romance movie. Her little detective nose is always working overtime.
She’s also a professional toy collector. Jazz will happily dump every single toy out of the basket just to find the one. Tug-of-war with her foster sister is one of her favourite sports, but honestly she’s happy with anything that involves fun, snacks, or quality time with her people.
Outdoorsy girl? Absolutely. Jazz loves walks, hikes, adventures, and soaking up nature with her humans… as long as nature doesn’t involve puddles. Puddles are suspicious and should be avoided at all costs.
This smart cookie already knows “heel” and “leave it,” is doing amazing on leash, and takes crate time like a champ. In fact, her crate is her happy place — just say “crate” and she zooms right in for naps and bedtime. She’s also incredibly polite at mealtime, patiently waiting in her crate for her “okay” command before digging in.
If you’re looking for a giant cuddle bug with a goofy personality, a heart of gold, and the softest brindle coat around, Jazz is ready to climb directly into your heart… and probably your lap too. Likes: Snuggling, toys, tug-of-war, walks, hikes, yogurt, inspecting grocery bags, food, crate naps, foster sister playtime, and MORE snuggles
Dislikes: Puddles. That’s basically it. Good with dogs? Yes, with slow proper introductions
Good with cats? Yes!
Good with kids? Yes, she can get excited when food or walks are involved and may be a little pushy with her enthusiasm, so families with very small kiddos should keep that in mind.

Chad
Birthday: April 2021 Sex: Male Breed: Deluxe Snuggler™ Weight: 96 lbs Chad is basically what would happen if someone turned a weighted blanket into a dog. This gentle boy has mastered the art of relaxing and takes his career as a Professional Napper very seriously. Barking dogs? Screaming kids? Chaos in the house? Chad says, “Sounds like a great time for another snooze.” |
This lovable lug wants nothing more than to be wherever his people are — preferably directly in the middle of the floor where everyone has to carefully step over him like a furry speed bump. He’s calm, patient, unbelievably gentle, and so laid back it’s honestly impressive. Chad has only barked twice the entire time in foster care, and both occasions were probably very important announcements about snack time.
He absolutely lives for treats, belly rubs, and quality lounging sessions. He’s a perfect gentleman on leash walks, knows how to shake a paw like the polite prince he is, and has the sweetest soul. While he gets along wonderfully with dogs, kids, and cats, he may occasionally remind a rude cat that he is, in fact, the king of the living room. (To be fair, foster mom says the cat usually starts it.)
Chad would thrive in a home where he has company most of the time. He doesn’t love being alone, he’d much rather spend his day supervising your activities while horizontally sprawled across the floor nearby. If you’ve been searching for a calm, goofy, affectionate best friend who asks for very little besides snacks and belly rubs, Chad may just be your soulmate in dog form.
Likes: Treats, napping, belly rubs, lounging near his people, snacks
Dislikes: Being alone too long, rude cats
Good with dogs? Yes, small dogs with slow, proper introductions. Small dogs only, he doesn't seem to enjoy big dogs.
Good with cats? Yes, as long as they’re friendly
Good with kids? Yes

Joe Dirt
Birthday: April 30, 2024 Sex: Male Breed: Slug-osaurous Weight: 60lbs Once upon a time, in a cozy foster home not so far away, lived a legendary little creature known as Joe the Slug-osaurous. Part cuddle bug, part adventure buddy, and part professional snack enthusiast, Joe is on a quest to find his forever kingdom (preferably one with a soft couch and snacks within reach). Joe’s signature move? The “Slug Slide” — gracefully gliding across grass, snow, or dirt with his belly low to the ground, soaking in all the textures. It’s both adorable and guaranteed to make you laugh. |
When he’s not on a grand outdoor expedition, Joe transforms into a certified cuddle champion. His favorite place in the whole world? Your lap… or your bed… or honestly, anywhere he can be as close to you as physically possible. He’s incredibly affectionate and thrives on love and attention — though fair warning, treats might be his one true weakness. Sharing them? That’s a work in progress (he’s learning that sharing = caring).
Joe is also a smart boy who knows sit, lay down, and stay, and he’s always ready to show off his skills—especially if snacks are involved.
Joe would do best in a home that can help set him up for success when it comes to food and high-value goodies. He prefers to enjoy his meals and special treats in his own space away from other dogs, and with a little structure (like separate feeding times/areas), he does wonderfully.
This sweet, quirky boy will keep you laughing, keep you warm, and keep your heart very, very full. If you’re looking for a loyal sidekick with a big personality and an even bigger love for cuddles, Joe is your guy.
Likes: treats & food (his true love), affection and cuddles, chasing & tugging, movie nights, bird watching, strolls in the woods
Dislikes: new textures on his paws, sharing food (he’s working on it!)
Good with dogs? Yes, with slow and proper introductions
Good with cats? Unknown
Good with kids? 16+ please

As a bonus, she'll even provide soothing background music with her adorable snoring after a busy day of adventures!
Francine thrives on routine and would love a quieter home where her people are around often. She's still working on a few things—like staying calm around other dogs and remembering that four paws belong on the floor—but she's incredibly food motivated and loves learning. With patience, consistency, and lots of treats, this sweet girl is ready to keep growing.
If you're looking for a loyal adventure buddy by day and a champion cuddler by night, Francine is ready to apply for the job of your new best friend.
Likes: Flirt pole, Kong toys, balls, walks, cuddles, carrots, treats, snuffle mats, puzzle feeders, window watching, learning new tricks, people
Dislikes: Dinner being late, loud unpredictable noises
Good with dogs? No
Good with cats? No
Good with kids? Older, respectful kids would be best.

Niska
Birthday: June 20, 2021 Sex: Female Breed: Sea Glass Sweetheart Weight: 44 lbs Somewhere beneath the waves lives a gentle little sea soul... and her name is Niska. Niska has a heart as calm as the ocean on a sunny day and a love that's as deep as the sea. Once she knows she's safe, she'll happily swim right into your heart and become your tiny little barnacle—sticking by your side everywhere you go! Whether you're making dinner, watching TV, or simply walking from room to room, Niska's favourite place will always be wherever you are. |
When she hears her people but can't be with them, she'll let out the sweetest little "where's my crew?" cries because life is simply better together.
And every sea captain needs a favorite game... for Niska, it's fetch! But there's one important rule aboard her ship: the tennis ball absolutely MUST squeak! No squeak? No deal!
After a day of adventures, this beach-loving beauty is more than happy to trade seashells for snuggles. Belly rubs are her treasure, cozy couch cuddles are her happy place, and she'll gladly spend the evening curled up beside the people she loves most.
Like gentle ocean waves, Niska prefers peaceful surroundings. Loud noises can startle her, and she'd rather spend time with respectful dog friends than ones who bounce all over her. She may bark when meeting someone new, but it doesn't take long before she's wagging her tail and asking for affection.
If your family has been wishing upon a seashell for the perfect companion, your search may finally be over. Niska is ready to drop anchor in a forever home where she'll be loved for all the wonderful, gentle, loyal girl she is. ⚓💙
Likes: Squeaky tennis balls, belly rubs, treat training, neighbourhood adventures, cozy couch snuggles, staying close to her favourite people.
Dislikes: Loud sudden noises, being away from her family, and dogs who don't respect her personal space
Good with Dogs? Yes!
Good with Cats? Yes! She's curious and may playfully chase if they suddenly dart away.
Good with Kids? Absolutely!
